Cherokee, IA (KICD)– Work is underway at the Cherokee County Fairgrounds to set up the new home for a historic schoolhouse coming from its current location north of the community.

The Lily of the Valley School has sat on a piece of land along Highway 3 for a number of years, but Cherokee County Fair Secretary Chris Nelson says that property was sold last year which led to long-time supporter Bonnie Ducommun securing the building’s future at the fairgrounds shortly before unexpected passing.

Nelson says the old schoolhouse will keep its historic set-up once at the fairgrounds but will have some of additional pieces of history added.

Fundraising is ongoing to help move the Lily of Valley School to the fairgrounds and to also assist with upkeep and preservation including the new roof that is going to be needed on the structure. Anyone wanting to donate can contact the Cherokee County Fair Board through their website.
