Sioux City, IA (KICD)– A Cherokee man is going to federal prison on drug conviction.

36-year-old Dustin Coates was sentenced last week after being found guilty of conspiracy to distribute methamphetmaine. He had also been convicted in 2013 for distributing a controlled substance in South Dakota.

The case accused Coates of distributing the drug from March 2021 until he was arrested during a traffic stop a year later after reportedly throwing two baggies out of the vehicle and attempting flee on foot.

He was given 15 years behind bars and will be required to serve tens years on supervised release following his release from prison.
