Storm Lake, IA (KICD)– The City of Storm Lake is considering a proposal for traffic enforcement cameras to help improve safety in the community.

A traffic study conducted by Sensys Gatso, a leading provider of automated traffic enforcement systems, showed traffic at eight of the city’s intersections had vehicles traveling in excess of 75 mph even with the highest speed limit at those areas is only 50 mph.

Rick WIlling who was a long time law enforcement officer before joining the automated speed enforcement industry told the city council on Monday such devices have a proven track record of success while also taking some stress off local police departments.

Willing says while the cameras his company uses can cover up to six lanes of traffic the number of vehicles present at the time of a violation does not affect the process of identifying a suspect vehicle.

No formal action was taken on the matter on Monday, but city officials did agree to look further into the proposal and continue a research process that originally began as a result of multiple complaints.
