Spirit Lake, IA (KICD) — A Dickinson County jail inmate charged with attempted murder tried to make a run for it Friday morning.

Sheriff Greg Balloun says 19-year-old Caleb Crosby was being walked from general population to a different area for a medical consultation. On the way he pushed through an unlocked door at the courthouse and tried to flee but was detained with help of the Spirit Lake police. The entire incident took approximately a minute.

Crosby was arrested in Osceola County on May 5th after allegedly shooting another man in Montgomery and stealing two different vehicles trying to elude authorities.

Now in addition to attempted murder and theft he faces charges of Escape from Custody – a class D felony.
The Sheriff says the unlocked door Crosby breached was supposed to have been locked.
