Spencer, IA (KICD)– A renovation project in Downtown Spencer is progressing ahead of schedule.

Main Street Director Nancy Naeve went before the City Council on Monday to announce the significant completion of some additional housing on the upper story in what is known as the Union Block.

One of the developers involved with 1103 Industries is Aaron Techen who says the plan with the apartments in the 300 block of Grand Avenue was to make the spaces inviting while also not having to reinvent the wheel.

Matt Bathke adds it wasn’t until 1103 Industries started working on the upper level that they realized they were going to have to deviate from the original plan of leaving the retail level untouched.

This will be the first time the apartments in the Union Block have been able to be inhabited in more than three decades with Spencer Municipal Utilities last pulling meter data in 1988.
