Spencer, IA (KICD)– Fire Prevention Week is underway across the nation and we are kicking off a multiple part series looking at perhaps one of the more common types of fires this time of year in our area: field and grass fires.

Spencer Deputy Fire Chief Mark Stover tells us weather conditions play a big role in keeping these blazes from starting in the first place.

It is worth noting that burning leaves or other yard waste is not allowed within the city limits of Spencer.

Deputy Chief Stover adds that if someone is out working in the field and a fire ignites, it is best to get away from the area immediately and call for help. Those that have a disc plow on site can also try to stop fire from advancing but they are advised to keep firefighters in the know with what you are doing for safety purposes.
