Spencer, IA (KICD)– Upgrades to the junction of Highways 71 and 18 on the north end of Spencer are possible before the end of the decade.

Iowa Department of Transportation Engineer Dakin Schultz says there continues to be an unacceptable number of crashes, even after a different configuration for the busy intersection was constructed a few years ago.

Schultz says the roundabout might be larger than ones seen in more residential settings.

The state had presented three options to officials from Spencer and Clay County. They weren’t thrilled with ANY of them, but the roundabout was by far the cheapest.
