The Iowa Boys High School State Soccer Championships began yesterday at Cownie Soccer Park in Des Moines.
In Class 1A, the #8 seed Van Meter upset #1 West Branch 3-1 and advance tot he State Semifinal where they will play #5 West Liberty who pulled off an upset of their own in a 2-1 win over #4 and defending State Champion Western Christian of Hull. That Semifinal matchup will be played at 4:00 on Friday in Drake Stadium. The other side of the 1A Bracket was chalk, as #3 North Fayette Valley beat #6 West Sioux 2-1, advancing to play #2 Regina Catholic of Iowa City who shutout #7 Hudson 3-0. That Semifinal will be played at 7:00 on Friday in Drake Stadium.
For Class 2A, the #1 seed Gilbert got past #8 Center Point-Urbana 2-1 and will match up with the #5 seed Bishop Heelan of Sioux City who thumped #4 Webster City 5-1. That semifinal match will be played at 10:00 on Friday at Mediacom Stadium. On the other side of the Bracket, #6 Perry upset #3 Decorah in a high scorer 5-4 and will advance to the Semifinals on Friday at 1:00 in Mediacom Stadium where they will see #7 Assumption of Davenport who upset #2 Glenwood in a 4-0 shutout.
The Class 3A Tournament had #1 Hoover of Des Moines edge out #8 Indianola 2-1 while #4 Norwalk shutout Marion 2-0. Hoover and Norwalk will play for the semifinals in Drake Stadium at 10:00 on Friday. On the other side of the Bracket, #6 Washington of Cedar Rapids came away with the 2-0 upset of Xavier of Cedar Rapids and advance to the Semifinals where they will play #2 Dallas Center-Grimes at 1:00 in Drake Stadium on Friday. The Mustangs routed #7 Storm Lake 8-1 in the Quarterfinals.
In Class 4A, #1 Johnston edged out City High of Iowa City 3-2 to advance to the semifinals. They will play #4 West of Iowa City who beat #5 Valley of West Des Moines 4-2. That match will be played at 4:00 in Mediacom Stadium. On the bottom side of the Bracket, #6 Pleasant Valley upset #3 Northwest of Waukee 2-1 and will move on to the Quarterfinals where they will see #2 Dowling Catholic of West Des Moines who edged out #7 Ankeny 3-2. That contest will be played at 7:00 on Friday in Mediacom Stadium.
