Spencer, IA (KICD)– In some areas of the state, land suitable for farming can be tough to come by but some people are concerned that by letting state agencies, like the Department of Natural Resources, to continually buy “marginal” land young farmers may find it difficult to get started.
Representative John Wills addressed this concern at Saturday’s Eggs and Issues forum saying work on this matter has been underway for a while in that a special matrix has been developed to determine when the DNR can scoop up a piece of land.
Senator Lynn Evans added that this process really all starts with determining what “marginal” land means.
Representative Megan Jones agrees that land is scarce in parts of Iowa, but she does not want to take away the ability for land to be donated to the state.
Senator Dave Rowley wrapped up the discussion by saying fixing this issue may be a good start at reducing the burden of property taxes.
