Arnolds Park, IA (KICD)– A Linn Grove woman is leading the charge to honor those who have served our country by placing blue star markers in various counties.

The idea for the markers comes a practice used in World War II that involved blue stars being placed in the windows of homes where servicemen and women lived along with businesses at which they worked. Following the war, garden clubs started to erect signs with blue stars along highways around the nation as a sign of respect and thanks with Marion McNabb, whose husband served in Vietnam, noticed several years later were starting to show their age.

Since then, McNabb has been able to have multiple counties in the local area designated at Blue Star Counties and has been making the rounds in Dickinson County this summer to continue her mission.

Since beginning the project, McNabb says the overall reaction has been favorable.

McNabb did not indicate which county may be next on the mission to give thanks to local veterans.
