Spencer, IA (KICD)– Main Street Market is always a great place showcase some of the local service opportunities in the Spencer community, but one local family has taken what used to be a giveaway to a benefit for area non-profits.

Travis Johnson tells KICD News he and his wife began growing zinnias at the Community Garden nearly a decade ago and started giving them away to anyone that wanted to stop and pick them up, but after several people tried to pay for the flowers, they decided to get involved with Main Street Market with proceeds collected each week going to a different local organization.

Since starting to benifit non-profits, Johnson says community members have really started to step forward to have an even bigger impact.

The Johnson family will continue this new mission on Thursday evenings at Main Street Market outside the Clay County Courthouse through August 17th and are already starting to determine non-profits to support next year.
