Algona, IA (KICD)–The man accused of killing an Algona Police Officer last week had his initial court appearance Thursday afternoon.

43-year-old Kyle Ricke appeared virtually for his first court appearance, just over a week after he allegedly shot Officer Kevin Cram during the service of an arrest warrant for third degree harassment out of Palo Alto County.

At Thursday hearing, Magistrate Judge Mark Laddusaw noted he has seen enough evidence for the case to proceed.

Ricke has been charged with first degree murder with Judge Laddusaw explaining the penalty, if convicted, is life in prison.

Assistant Iowa Attorney General Scott Brown asked that a cash-only bond be set at five million dollars, but the court set it at two million. Brown further noted investigators are still attempting to find the murder weapon.

Ricke is now in the custody of Kossuth County authorities after spending the last week in a Southern Minnesota jail where he was apprehended. A preliminary hearing in the case is scheduled for next Friday.
