Spencer, IA (KICD) — A major milestone has been reached in Spencer’s flood recovery. Mayor Steve Bomgaars announced on KICD Friday morning that all individuals who had been at the emergency shelter have now been placed in housing, either returning to their homes or apartments, or in temporary accommodations.
In a couple of other pertinent announcements: The new distribution center for families needing items like cleaning supplies and diapers is at 223 West 7th Street, which is the temporary location for Upper Des Moines Opportunity Center.
Also: The Red Cross is now set up at Pentecostal Church at 1700 11th Street S.W. – South of Menards – and will be taking applications through Sunday. They previously had been stationed at City Hall.
And Spencer Park and Rec Director Bob Fullhart says the electricity has been turned on at the Aquatic Center. He says a crew is doing a thorough cleaning right now, and they might start filling the pool as early as Monday. The city council directed staff to get the Aquatic Center open as soon as possible, even if it only operates for a couple of weeks this year.
