Spirit Lake, IA (KICD) — Iowa Department of Natural Resources officers in Dickinson County report that a young, male, moose seen on East Lake Okoboji Wednesday drowned when he broke through the ice.
The moose was observed swimming in both Big Spirit Lake and Marble Lake Thanksgiving weekend and showed up near Memorial Park in Spirit Lake Wednesday morning; and then was seen out on the ice near the portion of East Lake known as “The Narrows.”
The Arnolds Park Okoboji Fire and Rescue department will attempt to extract the remains from the lake and the DNR will transport it to Iowa State University for examination.
The animal is estimated to be around two years old and likely originated from Northern Minnesota. It’s believed to be a different moose than the one spotted in Clay County earlier.
