Arnolds Park, IA (KICD)– The second phase of construction on Highway 71 through the Iowa Great Lakes Area is in full swing and as of this morning includes the closure of the bridge in Okoboji.

Among those being affected by the work is the shared fire department and EMS for Arnolds Park and Okoboji, but Fire Chief Chris Youngbluth says plans were formed ahead of time to make sure residents on both sides of the bridge continue to be served.

Public officials had requested the bridge remain open for the entire construction process. Youngbluth says at least the contractor promises access whenever emergency personnel need it.

The Department of Transportation’s most optimistic estimate is that the bridge will be reopened in four weeks.
