Emmetsburg, IA (KICD) — A Pocahontas police officer received minor injuries Friday night, after a high-speed chase from Pocahontas to Emmetsburg ended with the suspect trying to run him over.
The chase involved police officers from Pocahontas and Emmetsburg, Deputies from Pocahontas and Palo Alto Counties, and the Iowa State Patrol. It started at 9pm when the officer on duty observed a pickup leaving Casey’s in an erratic manner.
When he attempted to stop 39-year-old Grant Buersmeyer over, Buersmeyer took off on a chase that exceeded 100 miles per hour until his vehicle was rammed by law enforcement authorities.
At one-point Bursmeyer weaved on highway 4 in attempt to dislodge chainsaws from the back of the truck and onto the roadway. Southbound motorists had to swerve out of his way.
On the outskirts of Emmetsburg “stop sticks” were deployed, which punctured the driver side tires, but Buersmeyer continued until a Pocahontas County Deputy executed a “pit” maneuver at the highway 4 and 18 intersection in downtown Emmetsburg. Buersmeyer’s vehicle stopped temporarily, but he lunged forward in an attempt to mow down the un-named officer from Pocahontas. He then backed into another vehicle and law enforcement used their squad cars to pin him in.
Charges include Assaulting a Peace Officer with intent to inflict serious injury, interference with official acts, eluding, and also possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia. In court, the judge additionally cited Buersmeyer with contempt and set bond at over 33 thousand dollars.
Buersmeyer is being held at the Pocahontas County Jail. His last known address is Westphealia, Missouri.
