Algona, IA (KICD) — The man charged with murdering an Algona police officer has entered a “Not Guilty” plea. Kyle Ricke (Ricky) was scheduled to appear in court Monday, but instead entered a written plea on Friday. The 43 year old Algona man – who was taken into custody without incident a few hours after the shooting on September 13th – has also requested a speedy trial.
He’s accused of fatally shooting 33 year old Officer Kevin Cram on the South side of Algona when Cram attempted to serve an arrest warrant. He was extradicted back to Iowa the day after Officer Cram’s funeral, and is being represented by public defender Barbara Westphal from Mason City. Since Assistant County Attorney Stephanie Miller is married to Algona Police Chief Bo Miller, Kossuth County has turned prosecution of the murder case over to the Iowa Attorney General’s office.
Ricke is next due in court for a pretrial conference on November 14th.
