Sioux Falls, SD (KICD)– Severe Weather Awareness Week continues Tuesday in Iowa with the focus turning to perhaps the most popular, but also misunderstood phenomena.

Tornadoes touch down an average of fifty times a year in Iowa and as we have learned in the recent past can happen in any of the twelve months which is why experts like Peter Rogers at the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls says it is important to take all warnings seriously.

Rogers says the key when a tornado warning is issued is to act quickly.

This is the time of year when everyone is encouraged to both formulate a plan of action for when severe weather strikes while also taking time to review and practice it with your family.

The annual statewide tornado drill will also take place WEDNESDAY at 10 a.m. in which the National Weather Service will send a special Weekly Test to NOAA Weather Radios and many counties and cities test their outdoor warning sirens.
