Sheldon, IA (KICD) –A Chicago man has been sentenced to eight years in federal prison for the armed robbery of The Iowa State Bank in Sheldon.

Surveillance cameras caught Leon Sutton – who is now 38 years old – entering the bank twice on the morning of June 3rd, 2021; and then returning a third time around noon brandishing a hand gun. Sutton was driving a car without plates that he had recently purchased, and the former owner helped authorities trace him back in Illinois.

The case was investigated by Sheldon police and the FBI, and was prosecuted by the US Attorney’s office. Sutton entered a guilty plea in May and received his sentence this week from US District Court Judge Leonard T. Strand in Sioux City. He remains in custody of the U.S. Marshall’s office until he is assigned a prison.

The exact sentence is 96 months in prison to be followed by 3 years of supervised release.
