Wallingford, IA (KICD) — It appears that fire from a burn pile near a large cattle-feeding operation East of Wallingford rekindled in yesterday’s strong wind and caught 16 hundred stored bales of hay on fire.
Wallingford Fire Chief Jarod Fisher says additional crews from Estherville, Gruver, Ringsted, Graettinger, and Armstrong were called in. The Emmet County Sheriff’s Department, Emergency Manager, and County Conservation employees assisted on scene. And twenty farmers and community members showed up with excavation equipment and semis with water tanks to bring the massive blaze under control.
Fisher says luckily the fire was South of cattle yards and barns and the wind was blowing from the North. Cattle were evacuated from the structure closest to the fire. Fire crews were on the scene for approximately 10 hours.
