Spirit Lake, IA (KICD) — An ill-advised angler had to be rescued from Big Spirit Lake after venturing out Saturday afternoon despite warnings from officials about poor conditions.  Spirit Lake Fire Chief Pat Daly believes the fisherman used his cell-phone to call the DNR, who then called his department to the Buffalo Run area on the Northwest corner of the lake.
Daly tells KICD News they were able to float a plastic sled across the open water to the stranded man who climbed in and was pulled to safety.  At no time was he in the water.
The call came in at 6:20pm at the Buffalo Run area of Big Spirit Lake on the Northwest corner.  Daly says the rescue took less than an hour.
He cautions against anyone else walking on area lakes, observing “There’s not any ‘good’ ice out there.”
