Fairmont, MN (KICD)– A Southern Minnesota man has been charged as part of an investigation into the shooting death of a child.
A criminal complaint obtained by KICD News shows 33-year-old Colton Mammenga of Welcome was charged last week with two counts of second-degree manslaughter, one count of child endangerment and one count of negligent storage of a firearm.
The charges stem from an incident on October 15th when Martin County authorities received a call from Welcome of a shooting with the reporting party enroute to Fairmont with the victim. Police were able to intercept the vehicle where a child was found to be suffering from a gunshot wound after reportedly being accidentally shot by another child. Despite life-saving measures being performed on scene, the two-year-old victim died two days later from injuries sustained in the incident.
If convicted on all charges, Mammenga faces the possibility of more than twenty-five years in prison.
