Milford, Ia (KICD) – The Spencer Volleyball team was scheduled to host an Early Bird Tournament on Tuesday but due to the heat, it was moved to Milford at Okoboji High School.

Pool A featured Manson-Northwest Webster, Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn and Spencer while Pool B had Algona, Okoboji, and South O’Brien.

The night started off with Manson-Northwest Webster beating Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn 2-0 and Algona topping Okoboji 2-0.

In the second round of games, Spencer lost to Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn 2-1 and Algona beat South O’Brien 2-0 to take first place in pool B and advance to the championship.

Spencer would bounce back with a 2-1 win over Manson-Northwest Webster to force a 3-way tie in Pool A. Okoboji got by South O’Brien 2-0, putting them in the 3rd place match and the Wolverines in the 5th Place match.

Algona beat Manson-Northwest Webster 2-1 in the Championship match to give the Bulldogs 1st and the Cougars 2nd.

South O’Brien would pick up the win in the 5th place match over Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn 2-0. Junior Setter for the Wolverines, Chloe Hustedt was happy to finish the nigh with a win over a rival.

South O’Brien coach Amy Schmidt felt her team played pretty well in the first two matches despite the losses, and finished the night good.

In the 3rd place match, Spencer won a hard fought 2-1 match over Okoboji. The Tigers played a full 3 games against each of their 3 opponents over the course of the night.

That is Spencer Senior Meredith Baker. Junior Addison Hoben thought it was a solid way to start season for the Tigers.

Spencer Coach Tara Hauschen says there is plenty from this Tournament for the Tigers to work off of.
