Orange City, Ia (KICD) – The Spencer Tigers competed at the Class 3A District Golf meet in Orange City at Landsmeer Golf Club.

The day was dominated by the home team, MOC-Floyd Valley, who shot 287 as a team, just 3 strokes over Par. That was 20 strokes below 2nd place Gilbert, the defending Class 3A State Champion. The Individual Medalist was MOC-Floyd Valley’s Davis Korver, who broke the 70 barrier with 68, 3 under Par. Runner-Up went to his teammate Isaiah Hulshof who scored a 70 which was 1 below par.

There was some drama to end the day, as Spencer and Hampton-Dumont-CAL tied at 324 strokes. Since the teams were tied after the top for golfers were scored, the tiebreaker went to the 5th golfer, which was Grant Ward for the Tigers who beat out Hampton-Dumont-CAL’s Will Sackville 87-91.

The 3rd place finish would qualify the Tigers for State as a team. Spencer Coach Marc Bruning said the Tigers had made it through the hard part.

Trevor Cooke was the leading scorer for the Tigers, golfing a 75 on the day, good for 5th in the individual scoring. Cooke talked about bearing down after a bumpy start to the day.

Kaden Miller had a really strong front 9, scoring a 38, which propelled him to a tie for 12th in the individual scoring.

Miller has some experience at the State meet, and says it will be an Iron heavy day for the competitors.

Now that he is through to State, Cooke will be looking to do some fine tuning.

Coach Bruning is looking forward to see how the team does at a meet where they arn’t one of the favorites to place high.

The State Spring Golf Meet will be May 22nd-23rd in Ames.
