Spencer, IA (KICD)– The Spencer City Council is mulling the idea of investing some money to apply for grant that would help construct a series of charging stations for electric vehicles.

The opportunity has been going through a joint committee involving officials from both the city and Clay County with Supervisor Allen Batschelet explaining the idea behind the federal opportunity is to build communities toward the future for electric vehicles.

The piece of the puzzle that was up for discussion was whether or not the city and county would split a nearly twenty thousand dollar cost to have engineers from Bolten and Menk fill out and submit the grant application that, if awarded, could be partially used to conduct a feasibility study to determine the exact needs for the community.

Mayor Steve Bomgaars noted while there may not be a lot of electric vehicle use on the local level right now, having some charging areas could eventually help with drawing travelers to the community.

There was some hesitancy from all five council members present, including Councilman Brian Balk, on whether or not now is the time to be considering how quickly technology in the electric vehicle industry is changing.

Following some discussion on the matter, the council voted during its regular session Monday night to table any action until all members could be brought up to speed and potentially give everyone an opportunity to have some of their questions answered.
