Spencer, IA (KICD)– A coach and teacher for Spencer Community Schools is being considered a hero after he took it upon himself last week to save two boys who had been swept into the Little Sioux River.

Evan Scheck is part of the girl’s tennis program and just happened to be in the area of the Aquatic Center Thursday afternoon for a tournament when the trouble was brought to his attention.

Scheck tells KICD News he quickly jumped into action before really even taking the scope of the situation or potential danger to himself into question.

Scheck says the real challenge then came while trying calm the very scared child down while rescue options were contemplated.

Finally, after an unknown amount of time and a failed idea or two, Scheck was able to safely get the boy to shore with some help from police.

Despite the entire ordeal, both boys escaped uninjured.

Authorities tell us the entire incident arose when the two boys attempted to cross a section of flooded trail. That has officials warning everyone to stay away from flooded areas as there is never any guarantee that the structure below is still in tact or a way to tell how strong the accompanying current may be.
