Spencer, IA (KICD)– Two boys are safe after ending up in the Little Sioux River Thursday evening.
Police were originally called to the 600 block of 4th Street Southeast around five o’clock for a disturbance complaint but officers on scene found two 12-year-olds clinging to a utility pole in the river after having reportedly been swept downstream while attempting to cross a flooded section of trail.
Police also discovered Spencer High School Tennis Coach Evan Scheck had heard the boys calling for help and had jumped into the water and was able to guide one of the kids to shore without assistance. Scheck then worked with law enforcement to get the second boy to safety with the help of a floatation device.
This incident has park and DNR officials urging everyone to stay away from flooded areas as there never a guarantee the surface below in still intact and strong currents can also be difficult to see.
