Milford, IA (KICD) — The Dickinson County Sheriff’s Department says two minors traveling on Highway 71 in the middle of the night received serious, incapacitating injuries when they turned in front of an SUV.
The unidentified children were Northbound around 1 o’clock Sunday morning, didn’t look when they tried to make a left-hand turn onto 260th Street, and were struck by the vehicle driven by 76 year old Richard Swanson of Spirit Lake who was coming up behind them.
Swanson and a passerby pulled the driver of the Polaris Ranger free before it burst into flames. Both the driver and passenger were transported to the hospital by Lakes Regional Healthcare ambulance.
Swanson’s passenger – Marsha Swanson – complained of a sore chest but was not transported.
The accident remains under investigation. The Clay County Sheriff’s Department; Iowa State Patrol; police from Milford, Spencer, and Arnolds Park; Milford Fire Department, and Terril Rescue all assisted at the scene.
