Two Near Drownings
Okoboji, IA (KICD) — Emergency personnel responded to two near drownings on West Lake Okoboji on the Fourth of July. Both incidents involved Sioux Falls men.
Arnolds Park Okoboji Fire Chief Chris Youngbluth says bystanders attempted to rescue 21-year-old Randy Vilayphone from 17 feet of water in Millers Bay. Upon arrival the dive team was able to bring him up where resuscitation efforts began in the rescue boat. He was taken to Lakes Regional Healthcare and transferred to a Sioux Falls Hospital. The Dickinson County Sheriff’s Department, Iowa State Patrol, Dickinson County Management, Milford Fire and Rescue, and Lakes Regional Healthcare Ambulance assisted at the scene. The Sheriff’s Department and DNR are investigating how Vilayphone wound up in the water.
Authorities were then called to the public beach near Arnolds Park Amusement Park at 7:30 where bystanders had pulled 22-year-old Adam Kiir from Sioux Falls out of the water and began resuscitation. Arnolds Park Police were first on the scene and took over CPR and used an AEM until Arnolds Park and Okoboji EMS providers arrived. Lakes Regional Health Care Paramedics then showed up and transported Kiir to Spirit Lake, and later to Sioux Falls. The Sheriff’s Department also assisted at the second call.
The condition of neither man is public at this time.
