Spencer, IA (KICD)– March is recognized as the National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month which is a perfect time to review the basics of this type of cancer and even talk prevention.

Colorectal or colon cancer starts with the formation of abnormal growths called polyps that can, over time, become cancer. While all cases do not carry symptoms, Angel Smith from Clay County Public Health tells us there are some things to be on the lookout for.

Smith adds colon cancer is known as one of the more common cancers in the United States.

There are multiple of ways to screen for colon cancer with healthcare professionals recommended that start around age 45 or even earlier if there is a family history.

As with any prevention method, the screening process for colon cancer aims for early detection being that treatments tend to be more successful and have better outcomes when the illness is still small and has not spread.
