Spencer, IA (KICD)– We are in what is typically known as the warmest time of the year in the Upper Midwest which unfortunately is when many accidental deaths occur because a child a left in a hot car.
Angel Smith with Clay County Public says while this topic is a focus this time of year, leaving a child in a car can be dangerous anytime.
Smith notes it is important to remember that here are different stages to heat-related illness that each carry their own symptoms.
Many newer vehicles now have sensors that will issue a reminder to check the back seat before walking away, but Smith also suggests leaving a purse, laptop or other essential item in the back seat as a reminder to look and to teach children that a car is not a good place to play.
