Spencer, IA (KICD) – Class A District 1 was one of the more chaotic Districts in Iowa High School Football for 2023.
Akron-Westfield was able to get through unblemished to win the district with an 8-2 overall record and 6-0 in the League.
Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn struggled in 2023, going 1-7 overall with their only win coming against Sibley-Ocheyedan late in the season. Jeremiah Delzer has been brought on as the new head coach of the Hawks. Delzer played college football in the Northwest Iowa area and wanted to come back.
HMS is installing a new system, and Delzer says the upperclassmen have done a good job of leadership while the team learns together.
Sibley-Ocheyedan snuck into the playoffs in 2023, but Coach Mike McCarty would like to see the Generals snag a few more wins to get back in 2024.
We could be seeing a two-quarterback system with the Generals this season.
South O’Brien is looking to get back to the consistent play we have come to know them for after a 1-7 campaign in 2025
That is head coach of the Wolverines, Mark Furhman. Furhman says the team’s desire to win has shown in the early season.
Many believe MMCRU is the favorite coming into 2024. The Royals went 7-3 last season and 5-1 in the district.
Alta-Aurelia could be a sleeper with a lot of production coming back. The Warriors will try to improve on a 2023 campaign where they went 3-5 and 2-4 in District play.
Matt Groenewold and Big Country 107.7 will have the coverage of Alta-Aurelia at Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn on September 6th, Sibley-Ocheyedan at South O’Brien on September 13th, and Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn at Sibley-Ocheyedan on October 11th.
