Spencer, IA (Northwestiowanow.com) — Two incumbent city council members have been defeated in Spencer.
Becky Peterson has won the At-Large City Council seat with a commanding 1,148 votes.
Incumbent Brian Balk received 623, and Brad Bolyard got 135.
In Ward 3, Amy Moser has defeated incumbent Tracey Larsen 246 to 154.
The new Mayor of Spencer will be Donovan Wunschel. He defeated fellow councilman Ron Hanson by 1,383 votes to 566, or over 70 percent.
Incumbent Mayor Steve Bomgaars did not seek re-election.
The city council must now decide how to fill Wunschel’s current Ward 4 council seat. Incumbent Mayor Steve Bomgaars did not seek re-election.
Tom Nelson was returned to office in the 1st Ward without an opponent, and Chuck Illg was elected without opposition for the Ward 5 Council seat.
The county-wide referendum to provide a property-tax levy to help fund Emergency Medical Services passed 1,604 yes votes to 1,022. That’s 61 percent. The measure needed 60 percent for passage.
In other contested races in Clay County: Linda Linn, Rich Menken, and Aaron Rutter won seats on the Fostoria City Council.
In a crowded race for Greenville City Council, the five candidates receiving the most votes were: Lisa Arthur, April Marx, Vincent Trierweiler, Barb Trierweiler, and Kayla Koch.
And in Webb there were four candidates for three city council seats. The top vote-getters were Cavon Riley, Christian Sylvester, and Trudy Ganzevoort.
