Aurelia, Iowa (NorthwestIowaNow.com) — Gusty winds and a burning harvester kept crews from five area fire departments busy for nearly five hours Friday night in rural Aurelia.

The Aurelia Fire Department responded to a field fire just before 8:30 Friday evening. First responders initially went out for burning cornstalk bales, but arrived to find a grain harvester fully engulfed, with flames threatening a nearby grain bin and livestock.

High winds quickly spread the fire, forcing Aurelia to call in mutual aid from Cherokee, Meriden, Cleghorn, and Alta. Firefighters used Cherokee’s aerial truck to reach the top of the grain bin and cool it down.

Crews successfully contained the blaze and protected the cattle, remaining on the scene until about 1:00 Saturday morning.

No injuries to emergency personnel or livestock were reported.
