Cherokee, Iowa (NorthwestIowaNow.com) — It was a busy week for the Cherokee Volunteer Fire Department, with crews jumping from grain bin explosions to structural rescues.

On February 16, the department sent Tower 1 to assist Marcus Fire with a grain bin explosion. Just two days later, at 3:47 a.m., firefighters were dispatched to an apartment building at 1025 North Roosevelt after a vehicle drove into the structure. Crews spent the early morning securing the scene and checking for structural damage.

The week rounded out on February 19 with a semi-trailer fire sparked by overheated brakes. The flames spread to nearby grass, but firefighters contained the blaze before it could grow.

Fire Chief Casey Carpenter says these incidents highlight the need for constant training. The department currently operates with 30 volunteers, one paid driver, and the Chief.
