Cherokee, Iowa (NorthwestIowaNow.com) — Cherokee County Emergency Management services director Justin Pritts posted an important update regarding potential river conditions and ongoing community recovery efforts in Cherokee.

Local officials are closely monitoring the Little Sioux River as significant rainfall is anticipated. While acknowledging the challenges faced by the Cherokee community one year ago, the focus is now on proactive safety, according to Pritts.

Current forecasts suggest that if the Cherokee area receives two inches of rain over the next couple of days, the Little Sioux River could rise to approximately 13 feet 10 inches by 6:00 PM on today.

At this level, there’s a possibility the river could extend into parts of Westcott Park and the outer areas of Spring Lake Park. Officials note there is considerable water storage between these two parks.

The actual impact will depend on several factors, including the precise location and intensity of the rain, how quickly it falls, and how much is absorbed by the ground. Cherokee residents should also be aware of the potential for flash flooding in streets and lower-lying areas, especially during heavy downpours.

On a related note, for those still impacted by last year’s events, disaster recovery assistance remains available. If you, your family, friends, or neighbors are still in need of help, it’s not too late to seek support. Pritts says recent cases have seen very positive outcomes.
