Cherokee, Iowa (NorthwestIowaNow.com0 — A Cherokee home sustained major damage Wednesday night after an electrical fire broke out in the basement.

First responders were dispatched to 818 West Cedar Street just before 8:45 p.m. Crews arrived within three minutes to find heavy smoke pouring from the basement.

Twenty-two firefighters battled high heat to confine and extinguish the flames, while separate crews searched the upper floors. Fortunately, the home was clear, and no injuries were reported.  Investigators determined the fire was electrical, originating near the circuit panel. Damage is estimated at 45 thousand dollars.
