SPENCER, IA (Northwestiowanow) – According to new data from the 99 Counties Project, Clay County is facing concerning cancer trends.

The 99 Counties Project is a statewide initiative led by the Iowa Cancer Registry and the University of Iowa College of Public Health. The project recently stopped in Spencer to present local cancer statistics and engage the community in prevention efforts.

The data shows that Clay County’s prostate cancer rate is 168 per 100,000, which is significantly higher than the state average of 125 and the national average of 113. Melanoma rates are also more than double the national average, raising concern among local health professionals.

The Avera Cancer Center provides comprehensive care including radiation therapy, chemotherapy, and immunotherapy. They also offer support services like social work, nutrition counseling, and financial advocacy, all close to home.
