Sibley, Ia (Northwest Iowa Now) – News Radio 102.5 and AM 1240 KICD brought you Class A District 1 Football on Friday night from Sibley as Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn was in town to take on the Generals of Sibley-Ocheyedan.
It was a closely contested first quarter with each team matching each other. Sibley-Ocheyedan went on a 17 play drive to open things up, running primarily out of the Wishbone, and fullback Hayden Glade bowled in for a 3 yard Touchdown run to put the home team out in front.
Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn answered with a quick 5 play drive that took just over 60 seconds. A big part of that drive was a 43-yard pass completion from Alex Vogt to Jackson Vogt, setting up a 5-yard Alex Vogt Touchdown run, tying the game at 7.
The Hawks would eventually take the lead with just 4 minutes to play in the 2nd quarter when McCoy Smith knocked through a field goal on his first try of the season, making it 10-7.
Sibley-Ocheyedan went away from the wishbone for most of the rest of the game, and answered the Hawk field goal with a quick drive, mostly on the ground. Hunter Kaufman scored his 5th rushing Touchdown of the season at the end of that drive with just 20 seconds to play in the 2nd quarter. That would be just the beginning of a huge night for the General Senior.
Despite a close halftime score of 14-10 in favor of Sibley-Ocheyedan, the Generals would leave the Hawks in the dust after that. Sibley-Ocheyedan scored 3 Touchdowns in the 3rd quarter, two of them on rushing Touchdowns by Hunter Kauffman. They continued that dominance in to the 4th quarter, with a couple more Touchdown runs from Kauffman and Tristen Wingate. The Generals led 49-10 before HMS was able to put together a Touchdown drive late, and Sibley-Ocheyedan came away with a 49-17 route.
In the loss, Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn was led by Alex Vogt who ended up with 208 of his team’s 287 total yards of offense. The Hawks fall to 2-5 on the year and 1-4 in Class A District 1 as they will likely miss the playoffs for the 2nd straight season. Up next will be a road contest in Marcus against MMCRU.
Sibley-Ocheyedan’s Hunter Kauffman dominated on the ground with 29 carries, totaling 193 yards and 4 Touchdowns. The Generals are now 2-5 on the year and pick up their 2nd District win. This sets up a road trip to Sioux Central next week where the winner will get the Districts final auto-bid in to the playoffs.
