ESTHERVILLE, IA (NorthwestIowaNow) – The Estherville City Council gave updates on a significant electric rate increase, an upcoming traffic change near the high school, and a proposed tax levy for fiscal year 2027.

During the regular city council meeting on Monday, February 17, the council discussed the implementation of a full increase in electric rates after a major cost hike from its power provider took effect January 1. City Administrator Penny Clayton said that after avoiding raising rates for nearly a decade, the latest jump gave them no choice.

The council also approved a temporary one-way traffic pattern on South 17th Street, put in place because of construction for the ELC Stadium and Sports Complex.

Clayton says that if the new pattern works well, the city may extend it into next school year — or it can be undone quickly by removing signage if it causes issues.

A public hearing date for the FY27 property tax levy was also set. Clayton says the proposed rate would decline from $16.51 to roughly $15.27 per $1,000 of taxable valuation. However, several factors may affect what residents actually pay.

The public hearing will be held at a future city council meeting, with more details expected in the coming weeks.
