NORTHWEST IOWA, IA (Northwestiowanow) — FEMA has approved more than $11.2 million in disaster recovery and mitigation funding across Iowa, Kansas, Missouri and Nebraska.

Announced by FEMA Region 7 on Wednesday, the funding includes grants through the agency’s Public Assistance and Hazard Mitigation Grant programs, designed to help communities recover from past disasters and reduce the impact of future events.

For Northwest Iowa, the City of Spencer will receive more than $118,000 to repair or replace components of its citywide sewer system. Rock Rapids Municipal Utility will also receive more than $138,000 for the repair or replacement of meters and regulators.

FEMA also announced more than $1.3 million in Hazard Mitigation Grant Program funding for Iowa projects aimed at reducing future disaster damage. That includes more than $997,000 for property acquisition projects in Hawarden and more than $330,000 for warning and alert system improvements in Marion County.

The funding is part of more than $584 million approved nationwide through FEMA’s Building Resilient Infrastructure and Communities, Public Assistance and Hazard Mitigation Grant programs. FEMA says the programs help states, local communities, tribes and territories restore critical infrastructure, recover from disasters and improve resilience against future severe weather events.
