Northwest Iowa (northwestiowanow) — Two Northwest Iowa communities are receiving nearly $4 million in FEMA funding.

Announced Monday, FEMA is awarding nearly $29 million for disaster recovery and mitigation projects across Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, and Nebraska.

In Northwest Iowa, more than $3.8 million will go to the City of Rock Valley through FEMA’s Public Assistance program for permanent repairs to maintenance and storage buildings.

Public Assistance funding is used to help communities recover from disasters by repairing critical infrastructure and public buildings and reimbursing costs incurred to protect public health and safety.

FEMA will also award the City of Cherokee nearly $114,000 through its Hazard Mitigation Grant Program for a flood-prone property acquisition project.

The mitigation program is designed to reduce the potential for damage from future disasters. Projects include purchasing flood-prone properties, improving drainage, elevating structures, and upgrading infrastructure.
