Spencer, Ia (Northwest Iowa Now) – The Spencer Tigers hosted Fort Dodge for a week 9 showdown with playoff implications at Dale Norton Field on News Radio 102.5 and AM 1240 KICD Friday night.
It was a good start for Spencer, who scored on their first drive when Quarterback Cael Bruning scored on an option run from 17 yards.
The Dodgers responded quickly, as Class 4A District 1’s top rusher Jamarius Gibbs Grean broke free for a 50-yard Touchdown run, tying the game at 7 after the extra point.
After a Spencer punt, Fort Dodge would throw an interception in their own territory, giving Spencer a 1st and 10 at the 31 of the Dodgers. Spencer would fumble the ball in the redzone though, missing an opportunity for points.
Spencer would regain the lead with 5:48 left in the 2nd quarter as Miles Robbins broke free for a 44-yard Touchdown run.
Fort Dodge responded quickly though, scoring a Touchdown on a Tru McBride 16-yard run, tying the game at 14.
Spencer had an opportunity to take the lead before the half, but once again, fumbled in the red zone, and the teams were tied at the break.
The mistakes continued to pile up for the Tigers, as a kickoff out of bounds to open the second half gave them an illegal procedure penalty. Fort Dodge opted for the re-kick, and Noah Daniel took that kick 96 yards for a Touchdown, giving the Dodgers a 21-14 lead after the extra point.
Spencer managed to score on the next drive, when Wide Receiver Brady Vreeman got the ball on a reverse, then passed it to Ryan Matthiesen in the endzone for a Touchdown. The extra point was blocked though, and Fort Dodge held a 21-20 lead with 4:36 left in the 3rd quarter.
After the teams traded punts, Fort Dodge knocked through a field goal, giving them a 24-20 lead with 3:40 to go in the 4th Quarter. The Tigers drove in to Dodger territory, but would turn it over on downs, giving Fort Dodge the 24-20 win.
With the win, Fort Dodge forces a 3-way tie at the top of Class 4A District 1. The District goes to tiebreakers now to decide playoff teams.
We had playoff Football for you on Big Country 107.7, as Emmetsburg hosted Grand View Christian of Des Moines.
Emmetsburg took a disappointing loss to Manson-Northwest Webster last week that gave the Cougars a District title, and the E-Hawks took out their frustrations on the Thunder Friday night.
Emmetsburg scored late in the 1st quarter with a 42-yard Touchdown run by Braden Yates, and surged from there, scoring 20 more points on 3 Touchdowns in the 2nd quarter to take a 27-0 lead into the locker room.
The E-Hawks opened up the 3rd quarter with a 63-yard Touchdown drive, extending their lead to 35, yet to get an answer from Grand View Christian.
The Thunder would then throw a pick 6 to Carson Baak, and Emmetsburg led 42-0.
The E-Hawks would get a couple more rushing Touchdowns before Grand View finally broke through on a 70-yard Touchdown pass from Judah Lock to Austin Jordan, but that would be to-little-to-late, and Emmetsburg rolled to a 57-7 win, advancing to the Class 1A Round of 16.
Emmetsburg did all they wanted to on the ground. Nine different ball carriers rushed for 391 yards on 46 carries, led by Brayden Yates’ 118 yards and Carson Baak’s 111.
With another 99 through the air, Emmetsburg outgained Grand View Christian 490-221 on the night, holding the Thunder to -36 rushing yards.
