Storm Lake, IA (Northwestiowa.com) — Here’s everything we know about a deadly standoff with Storm Lake Police over the weekend.

At approximately 8am Sunday the Buena Vista County Sheriff’s Office stopped a pickup driven by 45-year-old Daniel Joseph James Palenik for speeding. They say he was uncooperative, made threats, and fled. He was located at his home in the 300 block of Oneida Street a short time later. The neighborhood was evacuated, and a perimeter was set up.

The list of agencies who showed up with tactical and negotiating support to assistant Storm Lake and Buena Vista County officials is long: Sheriff’s Departments from Pottawattamie, Sac, Sioux, Woodbury, and Webster Counties; Police Departments from Fort Dodge and Sioux City; the fire department from Council Bluffs; the Iowa State Patrol; and the State Fire Marshal’s Office.

At 4 o’clock Storm Lake Police issued a news release that Palenik had fired several rounds at officials. They say he fired again at 3am Monday, at which time fire was returned. Palenik was hit and died at the scene.

Following procedure, the Storm Lake Police Department called in the Iowa Department of Public Safety’s Department of Criminal Investigation to look into the matter. The officers involved have been placed on temporary, administrative leave.
