Gilmore City, IA (Northwestiowanow.com) — The identity of the man who eluded authorities in Humboldt and Pocahontas Counties Tuesday night has been released. The Humboldt County Sheriff’s department says it was 41 year old Clayton Nielson of Gilmore City who was taken into custody Wednesday morning, and that he has now been charged with: Three counts of assaulting law enforcement officials while displaying a dangerous weapon, interference with official acts causing bodily injury, second degree criminal mischief, eluding police, and reckless driving.
The Sheriff’s department was called to Gilmore City Tuesday evening on the report of an erratic driver. They found Nielson, but say he was uncooperative, backed into a squad car, and led them on a chase into Pocahontas County. His vehicle became disabled after driving through heavy timber and brush and he continued to flee on foot. Dogs and drones were deployed, but the search was abandoned around 10:15 Tuesday night due to difficult terrain and darkness.
He was arrested around 10:15am Wednesday after a tip that he was back in Gilmore City. We’re told additional charges are pending in Pocahontas County.
