The Iowa 3 bridge over the Little Sioux River,a mile east of the U.S. 59 intersection near Cherokee, is now closed for repairs and will remain so until mid-November, weather permitting, according to the Iowa Department of Transportation. Sarah Tracy is the DOT District 3 Planner.

Motorists traveling east of Cherokee will need to follow a marked detour route using U.S. 59, Linden Street/540th Street, S Avenue, and Iowa 3/530th Street

Tracy says the DOT pushed the project up a year to mitigate flooding concerns after it’s closure last year during the June flooding on the Little Sioux River. The town of Cherokee essentially becomes cut off when multiple bridges are under water. Tracy says raising the heighth of the Highway 3 bridge will help.
