Cherokee, IA (KICD) — The Cherokee man who plead guilty to a fatal hit and run has received his sentence.
Judge Charles Borth this week ordered 30 year old Casey Lee Herwig to five years in prison and 50 thousand dollars additional restitution to the family of Phillip Watterson, who was found lying on a Cherokee street the day after Christmas 2022. Herwig’s insurance company has already paid the family 100 thousand dollars.
Investigators matched pieces of Herwig’s truck at the scene of the accident and questioned him. According to sworn affidavits Herwig told police he knew he hit something with his vehicle but didn’t know what, when asked if it could have been a person he allegedly answered “could’ve been.”
Herwig initially plead innocent, then changed his plea to guilty last month.
