NW IOWA (NorthwestIowaNow) — A major expansion of flood monitoring technology is coming to northwest Iowa, following severe flooding in 2024.

The Iowa Flood Center, based at the University of Iowa, has secured federal funding to install new equipment across the region.

 

 

Iowa Flood Center Director Larry Weber says the new equipment will help scientists better understand how water moves through the region during heavy rainfall events.

He says saturated soils were a major factor in the 2024 floods.

 

 

Weber says the Flood Center is also working to improve flash flood forecasting statewide, using new modeling techniques and partnerships with national weather agencies.

 

 

The project is scheduled to begin in early 2026, with installations continuing through 2028. Sensor locations will be selected in collaboration with local emergency managers and community leaders.
