Algona, Ia (KICD) – Multiple KICD 9-Country Area teams competed in Algona on Monday for a Cross-Country Meet.

In the Girls race, West Bend-Mallard’s Tyra Schupbach rolled to a 1st place time of 19:31.3. Spencer’s Peyton Morey would finish 3rd with a time of 20:15.4.

Mason City took the team title with an impressive 46 points. That was made up of the Riverhawks top 5 placing 6th, 7th, 9th, 10th, and 20th.

Spencer would place 4th, putting their 2 through 5 runners all in the 20-30 range, something head coach Drew Schiltz says they use to their strength.

Spencer’s Ava Morey was the fastest of those pack runners for the Tigers. She talked about battling through the hills and wind on a tough course.

West Bend-Mallard was 8th, followed by Okoboji in 9th. Jacob Evenson, head coach of the Pioneers says the girls got off to a nice start.

Estherville Lincoln Central was 11th, Spirit Lake 12th, and Emmetsburg placed 13th.

In the Boys Race, Spirit Lake’s Brandon Hughes ran 16:52 flat to place 1st. His teammate, Deitrich Dirks, as usual, was not too far behind, placing 2nd with a time of 17:09.2. Okoboji’s Evan Osler was 5th at 17:30.8 with teammate Lane Larson 10th at 17:51.9.

The Pioneers would finish 2nd with 69 points, 2 points back from Forest City, one of many 2A ranked teams at this meet. Coach Evenson said the focus was to push the pace in the early going for Okoboji.

Spirit Lake was 3rd with 97 and Spencer placed 6th at 150. The Tigers had yet a different lead runner in Monday’s meet. Here is Rylei Koppie who placed 16th at 18:05.1.

Estherville Lincoln Central took 13th as a team.
