Calhoun County, IA (Northwestiowanow.com) — Listeners began to contact the KICD News Department before noon Wednesday about a one-vehicle accident on highway 4 South of Pomeroy and North of Highway 20.
After getting the situation under control, the Iowa State Patrol officially confirmed to us that a bus carrying 33 individuals – including the Iowa Lakes Community College baseball team – were on board. One individual was fatally injured, two were airlifted to Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines, and ten were taken to Trinity Regional Medical Center in Fort Dodge. Officials from the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Department, Calhoun County EMS, and Rockwell City Fire and Rescue Department also resonded. Pocahontas Area Schools took a bus to the scene at the request of Pocahontas Police Chief Alex Leu to assist with transportation and support. The highway was closed for several hours.
The official accident report says the bus was the only vehicle involved. It left the road near 220th Street – locally known as the “Jolley Curves” — and rolled three times.
The family of the fatal victim has been notified. Iowa Lakes Community College held a candlelight vigil last night. North Arkansas College – the team Iowa Lakes was scheduled to play today – issued a statement asking their community to keep those affected by the accident in their thoughts and prayers.
